Designed by Ken Haggard and Polly Cooper of San Luis Sustainability Group, the Oak Glen Pavilion serves as the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens’ Education Center and has been described as “an artistic blend of sustainable features and functions and functions providing an eco-friendly atmosphere. Guests will be captured by the beauty of this building and the natural garden setting.” The USGBC LEED Registered building includes a number of green building features including passive solar design for natural ventilation, passive heating and cooling and daylighting, and straw bale construction with Forest Stewardship Council-certified scissor trusses. The building utilizes green, non-toxic materials and finishes and a solar electric photovoltaic system for clean and renewable electricity production. Recycled content materials were used for finishes and insulation and the building boasts a state of the art wastewater treatment system.
