Farewell to a friend
The local environmental community lost an important friend and supporter last month with the passing of Jim Cole. Blessed with boundless energy and great commitment to everything he undertook, Jim was a regular at events around the county and a welcome face at our Central Coast Bioneers Conferences. Jim founded the Institute for Sustainable Living, supporting vital nonprofits such as the SLO Permaculture Guild and the Paso Food Cooperative. He was a driving force behind the Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo Transition Towns movement and with his wife, Norma, co-founded Oak Creek Commons, an intentional living community in Paso Robles. Jim was instrumental in putting on the successful Reskilling event at the SLO Vet’s Hall in 2014 and conducted numerous permaculture training programs, establishing the first certification program in San Luis Obispo County.
