Young Farmers Back to the Land
Exciting news in the workshop domain: Matt Finkelstein and Anna Jelks will lead a workshop about young farmers at the CCB conference this year. Titled “The Future of Food – A New Generation of Farmers and Sustainable Agriculture,” the workshop will take a practical look at the young farming movement, the challenges, and how hard it is to be a young farmer, make a living, and sustain one’s farm. Despite this there is a huge interest in organic farming, especially in the past 5 years. How can we create a farming system that is more sustainable? Matt and Anna will discuss the importance of innovation in farming practices and marketing methods including keeping up with social media.
Matt, 25 years old, is the manager of Four Elements Farm in the chaparral hills off Highway 41. He received a certificate in Ecological Horticulture from the Center for Agro Ecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz. Anna graduated Cal Poly in 2006 and describes herself as “an impassioned foodie. I want to get people back in touch with food and support those doing good, clean, and fair farming.”
