Sneak preview of the film Nothing Like Chocolate to be held September 9

How does an afternoon of sipping wine, eating chocolate and watching a film about the making of chocolate sound?  Then please join us Sunday, September 9 from 2-5 p.m. at the home of Tom and Eve Neuhaus of Sweet Earth Chocolates for a special fundraiser for Central Coast Bioneers and a sneak preview of Kum-Kum Bhavnani’s wonderful documentary Nothing Like Chocolate. Narrated by Susan Sarandon, the film addresses the horrific issue of child slave labor at cacao plantations on the Ivory Coast of Africa, by showing how chocolate manufacturing can be done right. It tells the moving story of Matt Green, founder of Grenada Chocolate Company, and how his efforts at creating a cacao plantation co-op and building a small chocolate factory on the island have improved the country’s economy and provided a reliable source of income for farmers. You will have a chance to meet the director, who is a professor of sociology at UC Santa Barbara, and hear from Tom Neuhaus about his efforts to promote sustainability of cocoa farmers and encourage producers of cocoa products to adopt Fair Trade policies through his organization Project Hope and Fairness. And you will enjoy chocolates from Sweet Earth and from the Granada Chocolate Company with wine generously donated by Tolosa Winery. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online at Central Coast Bioneers. Space is very limited.
